Fire alarm user tests
Practical companion guidance for fire alarm user tests.
Written companion guide · Reviewed 14 October 2026

What and why
The routine user test checks operation through a selected initiating point and familiarises people with the warning. It is a limited test, not proof that every detector, sounder or circuit has been examined.
Before the test
Use a trained and authorised person. Confirm the system procedure, test key, previous test point and arrangements for occupants and contractors. Where monitored, agree the alarm receiving centre test arrangements before starting.
Carry out and record
For an appropriate non-domestic system, operate the selected manual call point using its test facility. Observe the expected panel response and warning devices within the agreed test scope. Rotate the point under the system procedure. Record the exact point, time and observations.
Finish the procedure
Restore the call point and reset only as instructed. Confirm the panel has returned to the expected normal state and that monitoring has been reinstated where applicable. Record any failure, isolation or unexpected indication and report it promptly.
Keep the limits clear
Do not open the panel, disable protection casually or keep resetting an unexplained activation. An actual alarm takes precedence over the planned test. Keep competent servicing separate from the weekly user record.
Use with your premises procedure
This guide supports the printed record. It does not replace the fire risk assessment, system instructions, required specialist records or competent assessment. Work within your training and authority.
