What and why
Waste, unsafe storage and electrical damage can create ignition sources or help a fire spread. These conditions can change between scheduled inspections, so staff need a way to report them whenever found.
Follow the premises through
Look at stores, kitchens, plant rooms, electrical cupboards, external waste areas and contractor work areas. Check that equipment and escape routes remain accessible. Review seasonal displays, heaters and charging arrangements where they affect the risk.
Keep electrical checks visual
Look for damaged leads, plugs, sockets, improvised connections, scorching or unusual smell or noise. Check charging follows the equipment instructions and does not obstruct escape. Do not open panels, remove covers, touch damaged parts or attempt live repairs.
Respond to a concern
If equipment appears unsafe, follow the site procedure for preventing use and obtaining competent electrical help. Do not handle a hot, damaged or suspect battery. Smoke, fire or an immediate threat requires the emergency response, not simply a maintenance entry.
Address repeated conditions
Record the source of recurring waste or storage, the person controlling it and the corrective arrangement. A repeatedly cleared corridor may need a management change. A visual check does not replace electrical inspection, testing or a suitable maintenance programme.
Use with your premises procedure
This guide supports the printed record. It does not replace the fire risk assessment, system instructions, required specialist records or competent assessment. Work within your training and authority.
