THE NO-NONSENSE GUIDE · FIRE LOG BOOK
Services and equipment locations
Practical companion guidance for services and equipment locations.
Written companion guide · Reviewed 14 October 2026
Make the locations unambiguous
Use the two location pages near the front of the book. Repeat the premises name, address and confirmation date on both. State the floor, room and a useful landmark, and add an asset reference where available. Separate the gas meter from the emergency control valve, and the electricity meter from the main intake, distribution board and isolator.
Confirm what you enter
Walk the premises with someone authorised to identify the equipment. Use drawings and service records where available. Record NOT KNOWN, NOT PRESENT or NO ACCESS rather than guessing. Arrange a follow-up for unresolved information and update the confirmation date when details change.
Photograph and read accurately
Capture the complete page square-on in good light, including the premises identity and date. If using text extraction or AI, check its output against the photograph. Do not allow uncertain handwriting, a blank cell or an old entry to become an assumed fact. The register is an index to equipment and records, not a completed fire risk assessment.
Keep access controlled
List the person who can arrange access. Keep security codes, individual assistance details and other sensitive information in the correct controlled record. Identifying a valve or isolator does not authorise its operation. Follow the premises procedure and use authorised personnel.
Use with your premises procedure
This guide supports the printed record. It does not replace the fire risk assessment, system instructions, required specialist records or competent assessment. Work within your training and authority.
